Huerfano County was one of the original
17 counties when Colorado became a state in 1876. At
that time it encompassed parts of what are now Huerfano,
Las
Animas, Otero, Bent, Costilla and the southern part
of Pueblo Counties. It was reduced in size as the state
progressed. The word "Huerfano" (War-Fe-no) translated, means "Ophan".
It references the lone volcanic butte 7 miles north
of town on I-25. The county and the Huerfano River
are named
after the butte.
During the latter half of the 1800's and
early 1900's, this area produced a wealth of coal, over
500 million tons
of Black Diamonds were taken from various mines in the
county.
Population of the county reached as high
as 20,000, (according to some historic references). The
mine became nonproductive
with the onset of state safety regulations and the development
of oil and natural gas as the fuels of choice.
Today the "Black Diamond Jubilee Festival" recalls
the days when "Coal was King" in Huerfano
County. The Town, Walsenburg was named in honor of
Fred Walsen,
one of the early pioneers and leaders of the community.
